Romania’s Halep can’t break Sharapova curse

27 October 2015

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep lost her first match this year against Russian Maria Sharapova, at the WTA Finals in Singapore.

Halep, who is ranked second in the WTA ranking of the best women’s tennis players in the world, couldn’t hold off Sharapova (currently no. 3 WTA), who won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

The Romanian will have to wait for another chance to take revenge at the Russian, who beat her three times in 2014 as well.

Simona Halep is still in the cards to qualify to the semifinals of the tournament in Singapore, but she will have a tough match against Poland’s Agnieszka Radwańska, who is looking to get at least one victory from the tournament, after losing both her matches so far against Sharapova and Italian Flavia Pennetta.

Halep beat Pennetta in her first match in Singapore but needs a win against Radwańska to make it further into the competition.

Last year, Halep played the final in Singapore, which she lost to the world's number one Serena Williams.
