Romania’s Fagaras Citadel attracts record number of visitors

25 October 2016

Fagaras Citadel in central Romania, which in 2014 was included in a list of ten best castles in the world, has already attracted 100,000 visitors this year, reports local Digi24.

Moreover, by the end of this year, the number of visitors can go up to 110,000. In 2015, some 75,000 people visited the citadel.

The number of visitors has constantly increased in the last years. For example, 18,000 people visited Fagaras Citadel in 2008, and 23,000 tourists went to see the Romanian citadel in 2009.

The citadel went through a revamping process. Following this project, some of its rooms, such as the Red Tower, the Prison Tower, and the Old Wine Cellar became accessible to the public for the first time. The rehabilitation of these three spaces required an investment of RON 1.3 million (some EUR 288,000).

Fagaras Citadel is located in the town with the same name, Fagaras, in Brasov county. Besides its massive walls, the fortress is also surrounded by a defensive moat. However, although it was a defense fortress once, the citadel is now a quiet place full of history where visitors can enjoy a lovely afternoon.
