Romania's deputy PM resigns from the Government

10 November 2015

Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea resigned from the Government on November 9 after he delegated his duties to a state secretary last week.

Oprea has been the target of many protests in recent weeks, after a motor policeman who was leading his motorcade died three weeks ago after he fell into a pothole. The policeman’s death unveiled that Oprea had used a motorcade many times although he was only allowed to use one on emergencies. The prosecutors who investigate the policeman’s death have found that Oprea had used a motorcade more times than the President or the Prime Minister this year.

Protests against Oprea became stronger after the tragedy in club Colectiv at the end of October, in which 46 people have lost their lives. Tens of thousands of people went to the streets last Tuesday to protest against Prime Minister Victor Ponta and deputy PM Gabriel Oprea. Ponta resigned on Wednesday, but Oprea remained a minister in the interim Government.
