Romania’s corn production is likely over 35% lower this year compared to the crop in 2014, due to the drought this summer.

More than 98% of the surface cultivated with corn has been harvested in Romania and the total quantity obtained was only 6.97 million tons compared to 11 million tons last year, according to data from Romania’s Agriculture Ministry cited by local Agerpres.

Romania had 2.42 million hectares cultivated with corn this year, each yielding some 2.9 tons. However, Romania has enough corn to cover its internal consumption, which is some 4.5 million tons per year.

Romania’s sunflower seed production also went down by some 27%, from 2.1 million tons in 2014 to 1.53 million tons, which is still double compared to Romania’s internal needs.

Romania had better results with the wheat crop which totaled 7.5 million tons this year, up from 7.4 million tons in 2014. The barley production also went up, reaching 1.05 million tons.
