Romania’s construction sector sees largest decline in EU

21 August 2014

Romania recorded a 10.2% decrease in the constructions sector in the second quarter of 2014, compared to the same period of 2013, which is the most abrupt fall in the European Union, according to Eurostat.

This new set of data shows why Romania’s economy went into technical recession in the second quarter. The construction sector fell 1.1% in the second quarter compared to the first quarter of this year, after recording a 7.4% drop in the first quarter of 2014 compared to the fourth quarter of 2013, according to seasonally adjusted data.

This reflects the decline of government investments in public infrastructure works. Unlike Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria recorded significant increases in the constructions sector in the first two quarters of this year.
