Romania’s agricultural production increases by a quarter

The value of Romania’s agricultural production increased by 25 percent in 2013, to some EUR 17.75 billion, which is a new alltime high, according to data published by the National Statistics Institute (INS).

Crop production increased by 40 percent, to EUR 12.18 billion, while livestock production was flat, at EUR 5.4 billion.

The value of agricultural services increased by almost a third last year, to EUR 170 million.

Grains had the biggest share in the crop production, of some 37 percent, up from 31.2 percent in 2012. The total grain production amounted to EUR 4.5 billion. Potato production also increased last year, to 10.6 percent of the crop production, which is some EUR 1.29 billion, and the oil seeds production was 9.2 percent of the total crop production value. Fruit and grapes and animal feed reduced their share in the overall crop production last year.

Cattle represented almost a quarter of the livestock production value, swine had a 19 percent share and poultry generated 20 percent. Dairy products had the highest share in livestock production, of almost 28 percent.

Agriculture contributed 5.6 percent to Romania’s GDP formation in 2013 and 1.1 percentage points to the 3.5 percent GDP growth, INS data shows.
