Romanians allot up to EUR 1,800 for garden improvements, start buying greenhouses to grow vegetables

19 September 2012

Romanians are willing to spend between RON 1,500 and RON 8,000 (or the equivalent of EUR 333 and EUR 1,800) on improving their gardens, according to a report from do-it-yourself retailer Praktiker Romania.

Two major trends in garden improvement emerged- gazebos and conservatories. In Bucharest, Praktiker has seen demand for wooden gazebos. Greenhouses are also in demand as more Romanians start growing fruits and vegetables in their own gardens, which is seen more as a necessity, rather than a hobby. Romanians also invest in irrigation systems.

“Exterior renovation had the biggest weight in the sales of Praktiker Romania during the months of July and August. The average spent is between RON 1,500 and RON 8,000, depending on the space clients have and on their hobbies,” said Cornelia Gheorghe, acquisitions director with Praktiker Romania.

The retailer runs 27 stores in Romania, where it shares the market with retailers like BauMax, Mr., Bricolage, Bricostore, OBI, Hornbach, Leroy Merlin.
