Romanian tram manufacturer designs its own tram model

28 September 2015

Romanian producer Astra Vagoane Calatori Arad is now working on its own tram model, in order to stop being dependent on the German company Siemens, its partner in manufacturing the Imperio tram model.

“For every auction that you win internationally, you have some conditions imposed by your partner. Basically, you are not independent,” said Adrian Paraschiv, marketing director of Astra Vagoane Calatori, cited by local Mediafax.

Astra has a partnership with Siemens for producing the Imperio model, the only Romanian tram. Imperio is currently used in Arad, western Romania, after the local authorities bought six of these trams.

Astra’s new policy is to sell wagons that are more modern and more expensive, rather than selling cheap products in large quantities.
