Romanian prime minister Ciuca runs for top seat in the Liberal Party

06 April 2022

The leading body of the Romanian Liberal Party (PNL) agreed to waive conditions related to the seniority in the party for prime minister Nicolae Ciuca in order to allow him to run for the top position left vacant after the resignation of Florin Citu. PM Ciuca may be the sole candidate.

"The prime minister is a strong leader, he will surely ensure a much stronger connection between the party and the Government. At the moment, prime minister Nicolae Ciuca enjoys wide support in the PNL," PNL spokesman Ionuţ Stroe commented, according to News.ro.

Former PNL leader Florin Citu had to step down over the weekend at the request supported by virtually all regional leaders of the party.

Florin Citu received the same seniority derogation in August last year when he successfully ran for president of the PNL.

The Liberal Party will elect a new leader at its Extraordinary Congress summoned for April 10.
