Romanian PM: Member States have specificities in refugee distribution

25 January 2016

The European Union should take into account the Member States’ specificities in the allocation of refugees, said Romania’s Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos in an interview with Le Monde.

Distributing the refugees based on a mathematical formula is not a real solution, the PM added.

“Romania has accepted to take part in the plan for receiving immigrants. However, there is a blockage because of the imposed quotas, which are rejected by several states,” Ciolos said.

The country is prepared to take on responsibility, based on its capacity.

“We need to be hospitable and open, but also realistic. Otherwise, it's a lack of responsibility,” the PM added.

Romania supports the European Commission’s idea of strengthening the European Borders Agency (Frontex).

“As long as we are not able to control the migrant inflows, it’s difficult to move on with the talks on distributing the immigrants,” Ciolos added.
