Romanian PM: Government to defend new Fiscal Code

23 February 2015

Prime Minister Victor Ponta said that the Government considers taking responsibility for the new Fiscal Code, if the Parliament blocks it and does not adopt it by the end of this parliamentary session, reports local Mediafax.

The Government announced last week that it wants to lower the value added tax (VAT) from 24% to 20% by January 1, 2016. It later said that it wishes to implement the measures by November this year.

By taking the responsibility for the new code, the Government also risks going through a no-confidence motion.

The current parliamentary session ends on June 30.
