Romanian online store sells discounted cars, reaches EUR 6.8 mln total sales in first two hours of early Black Friday

22 November 2013

Romania's largest online retailer eMag, which chose to start an early Black Friday all discounts day on November 22, sold four discounted cars in the first three minutes after the start of day, and had to post the sold out label on several types of products.

The tablets at RON 99 (some EUR 22) and the Samsung phones at RON 499 (some EUR 110) were all sold in the first five minutes, according to eMag.

The retailer started out the day with 160,000 already logged in on its website, waiting to snatch discounted products. In the first two hours, it recorded 45,000 orders. The total value of these orders was of EUR 6.8 million. Unlike last year, when the retailer's site was down on several occasions due to higher than expected number of visitors, this year the company said the site was up all through the morning.

The retailer had a stock of 63 discounted cars, worth some EUR 1 million, on sale for early Black Friday, under the brands Dacia, Ford, Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz. The retailer sold two Ford Focus cars, a Dacia Logan and a Ford Kuga, which were priced at EUR 11,000 – a discount of over EUR 5,000 for the Ford Focus, EUR 7,300 for the Logan – a EUR 1,800 discount. The discount for the Ford Kuga was of EUR 7,300.

In 2012, eMag and its sister company Flanco posted sales EUR 27 million and represented 39.5 percent of the total sales recorded during the Black Friday campaign. The retailers expect some EUR 41 million in Black Friday sales this year. This year, eMag expects some 200,000 orders on the day of the event, over four million unique visitors and sales of EUR 21.7 million.
