Romanian MPs propose higher speed limit in villages and cities

12 October 2016

A group of senators from the Social Democratic Party (PSD) have initiated a draft law to increase the speed limit in villages and cities to 70 km per hour for motorcycles and passenger cars, and 60 km per hour for the other vehicles.

At present, the speed limit on Romanian roads is 50 km per hour in cities and villages, 90 km per hour outside inhabited areas, and 130 km per hour on highways. However, some municipalities set their own speed limits. In some cities there are roads where the speed limit is even lower than 50 km/h while some villages have higher speed limits.

The MPs think that this change would ease the traffic on busy roads, and reduce the time the drivers spend in traffic, reports local Adevarul.ro.

The draft bill also provides that the temporary warning and restriction signs installed on road sections under construction or repair will also be accompanied by additional signs, marked with the work’s duration and program.

The draft law was submitted to the Parliament on Tuesday, October 11.
