Romanian politician Crin Antonescu announced on Monday morning that he will resign from the helm of the National Liberal Party PNL, after the party didn’t met the 20 percent target set for this year’s European Parliament elections. He said he will submit his resignation later today, during a meeting of the party’s leadership, reports local Hotnews.ro.

Antonescu said before the elections that he will resign from the position of president of PNL if the party doesn’t get 20 percent of the votes. According to partial results after the counting of 94 percent of the ballots, PNL got a little under 15 percent.

Moreover, Klaus Iohannis also announced on Monday morning that he resigned from the position of first vice-president of PNL.

“Given the results obtained by PNL at yesterday’s elections, and I refer more to the results obtained in Sibiu, I inform you that I’ve resigned this morning from the position of first vice-president of PNL and from the quality of member in the Political Bureau,” he said in a press conference.

He said he informed the party’s president about this decision. According to sources quoted by local Antena 3, the entire leadership of PNL will resign.
