Romanian former PM Petre Roman loses seat in Parliament

10 February 2015

Romanian politician and former Prime Minister Petre Roman lost his seat in the Parliament due to incompatibility.

The National Integrity Agency (ANI) ruled in March last year that Petre Roman had been in incompatibility since December 2012, as had was an individual registered for business (PFA) while being a deputy in Romania’s Parliament at the same time, reports local Hotnews.ro.

According to the law, the member of the Romanian Parliament and other state officials can’t be involved in any private businesses as shareholders or managers.

Petre Roman was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 2012. In March 2014 he said he would challenge ANI’s decision in court, as he had no revenues as a registered individual. However, in January 2015, ANI informed the Parliament that Petre Roman took no legal action in court and held the incompatibility decision as final.

Elected officials who are found incompatible lose their seats and can’t be elected for three years, according to the law.

The Chamber of Deputies took note of the termination of PetreRoman’s deputy mandate and approved the vacancy of this deputy seat, on Monday, February 10.

Petre Roman, 68, was Romania’s Prime Minister between 1989 and 1991. He was also President of the Senate from 1996 to 1999 and Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1999 and 2000. He’s currently a member of the National Liberal Party (PNL).
