Romanian audiovisual watchdog shuts down Radio Guerilla; team behind project to re-submit for broadcasting licenses

20 September 2013

The Romanian Audiovisual Council (CNA) has withdrawn the broadcasting licenses of Radio Guerilla, owned by Realitatea Media, leaving the broadcaster's future in doubt.

CNA is yet to mention when the radio station will have to stop broadcasting.

The authority's decision came after Realitatea Media, currently insolvent, announced it would sell the broadcasting licenses of Radio Guerilla via auction.

However, the law states that the licenses can only be sold with CNA's approval and respecting a series of conditions, which is the main reason for the license withdrawal by the council.

The decision covers all 24 licenses, 23 terrestrial and a satellite one owned by Realitatea Media for Radio Guerilla. The terrestrial licenses cover various Romanian cities.

The team behind the radio station announced on its website it is committed to re-gaining its licenses, and plans to do so by attending the auction for licenses in 45 days, in a bid to continue their editorial project.

In the meantime, it will respect CNA's decision, just like 'it has always respected the law', according to its statement.
