Romania could switch from gas and fuel oil to electricity for household heating

22 October 2014

Electricity could replace natural gas and fuel oil as an energy source for household heating in Romania, said energy minister Razvan Nicolescu quoted by Mediafax newswire.

Using electricity for heating could be in Romania’s new energy strategy, which should be ready in November this year.

Romania currently has overcapacity for electricity generation, using only about 6-7,000 MW of installed capacity from the available 20,000 MW. Electricity consumption has also been declining in recent years.

Meanwhile, the country is still importing small amounts of natural gas from Russia, to cover its internal consumption, part of which goes to heating households during winter.
