Reuters: Hungary plans to raise a fence at its Romanian border in case refugees change their routes

15 September 2015

Hungary plans to extend the border fence along its border with Serbia towards Romania, to stop the migrants that may try to take new routes to its territory, according to Reuters.

Hungary has already blocked its border with Serbia by building a 175-kilometer razor wire fence, to stop migrants coming from South-Eastern Europe in their way to Western Europe.

"We have made the decision to start preparatory works for the construction of a fence starting from the Hungarian-Serbian-Romanian border at a reasonable length should migration pressure shift in the direction of Romania," Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said in a press conference.

More than 40,000 refugees, most of the coming from Syria and neighboring countries have made it into Hungary, after passing through Greece, Macedonia, and Serbia. The migrants continue to pour from the conflict areas in the Middle East while the European Commission and EU member states are struggling to find solutions to handle the biggest migration to Western Europe since World War Two.

The European Commission’s proposal for mandatory refugee quotas has been opposed by Eastern European member states, including Romania.
