Public sector wages, a disaster, says Romanian Prime Minister

23 February 2015

Public sector wages are an unsolved issue, even a disaster, said Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

He said that the country’s President and Prime Minister earn less than a private company’s secretary, reports local Wall-street.ro.

Romania’s former President Traian  Basescu received a monthly salary of RON 6,706 (some EUR 1,480), as of February last year.

The Prime Minister also said that a significant part of the local authorities receive the minimum wage.

Last Friday, February 20, over 29,000 public administration clerks went on a warning strike, asking for food vouchers and salary increases.

Employees from the public administration make between RON 900 (EUR 202) and RON 1,900 (EUR 426) monthly, union representatives say.
