Romania's President is looking for a new Prime Minister. Who could that be?

06 November 2015

Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis talked with the representatives of the biggest political parties in Romania on Thursday to find their opinions and options on how to proceed after Victor Ponta’s resignation.

The Social Democratic Party (PSD), which has been governing in the past three and a half years, called for a longer consultations period before nominating a candidate. However, it seems that they would be willing to accept a politically independent Prime Minister to lead the Government until next year’s parliamentary elections.

On the other side, the National Liberal Party (PNL), which is the main opposition force in the Parliament, has been vigorously asking for early elections, as they are looking to take the majority of seats in the Parliament and form the Government. The liberals haven’t nominated anyone for Prime Minister.

Having no nomination on the table, the President is meeting today with the representatives of the civil society and of the “street” to find out their options.

According to several sources quoted by Euractiv.com, Iohannis will also have an informal meeting with Romania’s former European Commissioner for Agriculture Dacian Ciolos, who might be in the cards to lead a technocrat Government.
