Powerful storm knocks down 400-hectare forest in Romania

14 July 2016

A powerful storm has caused huge damage to a forest in Brosteni, Suceava county in northeastern Romania. All 500,000 trees of a 400-hectare forest were broken or uprooted by the storm, reports local Digi24.

Nearly 100 foresters were deployed in the area to collect the trees knocked down by the powerful storm, and it could take them up to three years to do this. According to first estimates, some 115,000 cubic meters of wood were compromised.

The total damage is hard to assess because the forest destroyed by the storm could have been exploited only after 60-70 years. According to local Stirileprotv.ro, the cost could amount to tens of millions of euros.
