Pharma producers in Romania announce layoffs for fiscal reasons

08 October 2014

Generic drugs manufacturers in Romania announced more than 200 layoffs by the end of this year, as the fiscal and legal framework has seriously affected industrial operations in recent years, according to the Association for Generic Medicine Producers APMGR.

“The unsustainable and discriminatory system of taxation in recent years has greatly affected the industrial operations of APMGR member companies, which announced that over 200 employees will be laid off by the end of 2014. This trend will also continue in the coming years, unless specific measures are taken to remove access and investment barriers imposed to producers of generic drugs,” reads a statement of the association, cited by local Mediafax.

The APMGR member companies have 8,000 employees in Romania and contribute with around 1.5% to the country’s GDP, via direct and indirect taxes.
