(P) Special Jazz Event: Teodora Enache, Ella Fitzgerald of Romania and the guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan

08 November 2013

The concert, “Hymns for voice and fingers”, will take place on 13 of November at Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest and on 16th of November in Sibiu.

Stanley and Teodora’s first encounter was in 2004, at The Iridium, New York City’s most famous jazz club, during a celebration of the legendary music icon, the late Les Paul. There, they performed together in a jam session. Shortly after this moment, they have been invited to perform in duo, at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Jordan's innovative "touch technique" is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While a handful of other players were using similar techniques, Stanley’s fluid, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence. Jordan's touch technique allows the guitarist to play melody and chords simultaneously with an unprecedented level of independence. It also allows Jordan to play simultaneously on two different guitars, or even on guitar and piano. Jordan has received four Grammy nominations. His most recent album "Friends" was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Los Angeles Times jazz critic Leonard Feather wrote, “Genius is a word often tossed around in musical circles, but it has been rightfully applied to Stanley Jordan.”

Back in 2003, while touring the USA, Teodora had the great honour to meet Ahmet Ertegun (the founder of Atlantic Records), the jazz legend that launched Ray Charles and first recorded Ella Fitzgerald or John Coltrane, among many others. He attended two of Teodora’s concerts. Then, he wanted to meet her and he stated that, while listening to her singing, he had quite the same feeling he had when he first listened to Ella Fitzgerald.

Teodora’s quest of self discovery through music continues. Today, in full artistic maturity, she uses the music as a vehicle to reach beyond the gates of her soul. She picks her stage mates so that she can explore the geographical, cultural and spiritual Roots. Let’s mention her albums from the ROOTS series (Roots I ‘Back To My Roots’ – tribute to the Romanian traditional song, Doina, Roots II ‘Shorashim’ – tribute to multiculturalism, a project that brings together musicians of different ethnos she looks for the common root with, and, coming up, Roots III ‘Looking In The Mirror’).
