(P) This Romanian company has developed sweets with natural sweeteners to fight the country’s EU highest high sugar consumption

04 March 2019

Sweeteria is a Romanian company that has launched a "ready-made" sweets line, replacing sugar with natural sweeteners. It creates recipes with care, without additives, artificial flavors, preservatives, dyes - meaning without any compromises.

Romania is Europe's largest sugar consumer, exceeding 30 kg of sugar per inhabitant per year, double the consumption of a European.

The owners of Sweeteria are responsible parents, so their investment decision was triggered by two things: the worrying statistics of the International Diabetes Federation in Romania and the lack of a range of products that incorporate natural sweeteners in Romania. The market was missing such products because of the lack of technology and equipment and the poor experience of Romanian producers in this field.

Data is worrying: over 796,000 (67% urban) people with diabetes were registered in 2011, of which 2651 (61% urban) were children, according to data published by the Romanian Ministry of Health. The incidence was of approximately 64,000 new cases per year, and the incidence of juvenile diabetes was estimated at 262 new cases per year (2010).

In 2015, the Ministry of Health indicated the number of people with diabetes in its records was of 999,192 while the number of people diagnosed in 2015 alone was 7,337 (a whopping 202 new cases per day). Between 2006 and 2016, the number of people for whom diabetes treatments have been reimbursed by the state has doubled and costs have increased 6 times.

Basically, what Sweeteria does today - adapting sugar recipes to the new trend of natural sweeteners, making recipes with natural ingredients - is what made the "traditional" confectionery in the 1940s - pioneering.

In Romania, the sweeteners market (and sweets to incorporate them) is somewhere at 5%, compared to Europe  - for example in London where in many stores the shelves are equally filled sugar sweets and sweets made with sweeteners.

The Sweeteria products (products permitted by EU legislation) are developed with the best-known sweetener on the Romanian market: Stevia sweetener and erythritol. The company is currently working on a range of sweets made with other natural sweeteners.

Sweeteria offers today a wide range of products, designed for the day-to-day needs of the entire family, ranging from fiber-rich breakfasts, nutrients, and vitamins to fast and delicious snacks. From varied spreads, from 100% natural ingredients to sweets ready to accompany you on the road. From desserts, cakes and ready-made cakes to products that can become ingredients in your own home-made desserts.

Sweeteria is an award-winning brand in the 9th edition of the Wolda 2018 international logo design contest. This year's Wolda edition featured 307 entries from 46 countries (worldwide), and Sweeteria won this prize in the "New logo - Europe" section in Tokyo's jury.

You can buy Sweeteria products online in their webshop.
