Olympic torch relay in Bucharest this weekend, after Olympic flame arrives in Romania from Greece

The Olympic Flame Relay for the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival’s sponsors (EYOWF) will be in Bucharest on February 9. The flame will be carried by a total of 70 people, over a distance of 16 km on the capital, starting 12:00.

The Olympic Flame, which will burn throughout the EYOWF in Brasov, Romania, between February 17 and February 22, arrived Sunday (February 3 ) at the Otopeni airport in Bucharest after the lighting ceremony in Greece (in picture). From February 9, the flame will be carried by a relay from Bucharest to Brasov, where it will arrive on February 17.

Some 910 athletes from 45 countries will take part in the EYOWF this year. The boys will outnumber the girls at the competition, with 559 male competitors and 351 female athletes to take part.

Romania will have a team of around 100, which also includes the coaches, which puts the number of foreign athletes at over 800. Foreign coaches and technical staff will also add to this number.

The full list of events and numbers of competitors is as follows: Alpine Skiing :187 athletes, Biathlon: 145 athletes, Cross country: 168 athletes, Ski jumping: 85 athletes, Snowboarding: 91 athletes, Figure skating: 50 athletes, Short Track Speed Skating: 64 athletes, Ice Hockey: 120 athletes.

Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will attend the Opening Ceremony, according to the event’s official website. Patrick Hickey, President of the European Olympic Committee (EOC) will also be present. More about the event here.
