Banks in Romania issued 3.26 million bank cards last year, reaching 45.9 million at the end of 2014.

Only about 11 million of them were active, 300,000 less compared to December 2013, according to the Romanian National Bank.

Cash withdrawals dominated the bank card transactions in the fourth semester of the last year.

The banks registered 59.01 million ATM transactions, compared to 52.09 million POS transactions. The ATM transactions amounted to EUR 7.4 billion, whereas the POS transactions stood at EUR 1.5 billion.

However, the number of POS transactions increased by 7.76 million last year, whereas the ATM cash withdrawals went up only by 1.33 million.
