New Symphony Season opens at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest this October

The George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by famous Russian Yuri Simonov, will play at the opening of the 2013-2014 Symphony Season at the Romanian Atheneum in Bucharest on October 3 and October 4.

Starting at 19:00, the event’s program includes: Gioachino Rossini - William Tell Overture, Richard Wagner - Siegfried's Rhine Journey, Siegfried’s Death and Funeral Journey and Dmitri Shostakovich - Symphony no. 15.

Yuri Simonov was born in Saratov, USSR. He studied at the Leningrad Conservatoire with Rabinovich and assisted Mravinsky at the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra.

Following success in the Santa Cecilia Conductors' Competition in Rome in 1968, he was invited to make his debut at the Bolshoi Opera in 1969, where he was almost immediately appointed Chief Conductor.

He was the youngest conductor in this opera’s history and with his appointment only ending in 1985, also the longest serving.
