New Romanian law sets fines for teachers who punish students

20 November 2013

Romanian teachers will no longer be allowed to kick students out of class, punish them by sending them to a corner or by asking them to stand up for the entire class, according to a newly published law.

Teachers and administrative staff will be fined between RON 1,000 and RON 2,500 (EUR 220 to EUR 550) should they do any of the above, or if they insult students or discriminate against students. It is also forbidden for teachers to apply corporal punishment or any other degrading treatment.

However, the fines will not be applied at the first breach of law, but only if teachers' actions are proved to psychologically affect the student, his results in school or his behaviour at home.
