New charges for Romania's audiovisual watchdog head

12 May 2015

The National Anticorruption prosecutors (DNA) have decided to extend the prosecution of  Laura Georgescu, the head of Romania’s audiovisual watchdog CNA, for new charges of abuse of office and instigation to forgery.

They have seized her assets and accounts worth up to EUR 517,000. The amount represents the damage claimed by several TV stations.

Prosecutors decided to extend the prosecution after another four TV stations submitted complaints against Georgescu. These have argued that CNA sanctioned them based on false accusations. In total, seven TV stations brought charges against CNA.

According to DNA prosecutors, Georgescu has asked several CNA employees to write false complaints against televisions between 2013 and 2014.
