Netflix imposes account-sharing tax in Romania as well

24 May 2023

Romanians who share their Netflix account with others will have to pay a monthly fee of EUR 2.9 per additional user.

Popular streaming media company Netflix has started sending notifications to users in Romania, informing them that the so-called account-sharing fee is being implemented. In Romania, this fee will be EUR 2.9 per month for each additional user.

The company's account-sharing fee exceeds or is around the full monthly fee in Romania for other services like Amazon Prime Video (EUR 2.82 per month), HBO Max (EUR 3.3 monthly with the yearly plan), or SkyShowtime (EUR 3.99 per month).

Netflix is implementing the sharing fee in Romania and other countries after an initial phase during which it was tested in a limited number of countries. The US-based company is attempting to increase its revenues in this way, after benefiting from the popularity growth in previous years precisely through account sharing.

The negative effects of this measure are already noticeable. It is estimated that over 1 million accounts were deactivated in Spain in the first quarter of the year after the introduction of the fee.
