Minister: Half of Romania’s electricity production capacity is inefficient

24 June 2015

Almost half of Romania’s electricity production capacity is economically inefficient or at the limit of efficiency, said Energy Minister Andrei Gerea. He was referring to the production based on coal, wind, solar and biomass.

“These components which represent half of our electricity production capacity are either inefficient or at the limit because they need support schemes, or they need subventions accepted at the EU level,” Gerea said, cited by local Agerpres.

It is a challenge that not only Romania faces, but most countries which still hold old technologies for electricity production.

As for the renewable energy sources, Romania needs to ensure a price that the final consumers can afford.

“Romania can’t afford major increases in energy prices in a very short time,” Gerea added.
