Michelin invests EUR 33 mln in Romanian plant to produce new tire models

31 May 2017

Michelin Group, one of the largest tire manufacturers in the world, is investing EUR 33 million in its Zalau plant in Romania to start producing new tire models. The new models target the intermediate market segment, and will include the Tigar brand.

With the investment, Michelin will add 100 new jobs by 2021, while Michelin Zalau Anvelope will become the group’s only European plant to manufacture the new models for the lower level of the intermediate market segment.

“This new strategic project of the Michelin Zalau Anvelope plant perfectly marks its 40 years of continuous development. I am very proud that the Michelin team continues to contribute to the group’s growth strategy. The plant is now ready to deal with new challenges by setting up modern equipment, launching new brands and implementing a business model that links the plant directly to the client,” said Sean Parry, the director of the Michelin Zalău industrial platform.

The Zalau plant manufactures some 130 tire models for markets in Europe, Africa, Asia and America. It currently employs 1,130 people.

Besides the tire plant in Zalau, Michelin also owns in Romania a tire cord factory in Zalau and a tire plant in Floresti, in Prahova county.

Michelin Romania has some 3,300 employees and also operates a commercial network, and an Excellence Center, which offers support services for several Michelin subsidiaries in Europe.
