16 March 2016

One of Romania’s most popular seaside resorts, Vama Veche, may become the new home for at least 500 Syrian refugees. The authorities haven’t officially confirmed the information yet.

A former military base in Vama Veche will be turned into a refugee camp. The local authorities in the villages of Vama Veche, Limanu, and 2 Mai have been informed unofficially that they should expect at least 500 Syrian refugees, reports local Stirileprotv.ro.

Work is already underway at the former military base, which is just near Romania’s border with Bulgaria. The base will be equipped with all the necessary amenities to accommodate the migrants. The work should be finalized by the beginning of April.

The locals in Vama Veche are not happy with the authorities’ decision to bring refugees in their village while the investors who run guest houses and restaurants in the resort hope that the refugees will stay there only for a short period, according to Stirileprotv.ro.

Vama Veche is one of the favorite summer holiday destination for young Romanians.
