Lower average net salary in Romania in May

07 July 2015

The average net salary in Romania amounted to RON 1,806 (EUR 406) in May this year, 2.7% lower than in April. Compared to May 2014, the average net wage increased by 7.4%, according to recent data from the National Statistics Institute (INS).

The highest average net earnings were recorded in the crude oil and natural gas extraction sector – RON 6,523 (some EUR 1,470), while the lowest were registered in hotels and restaurants – RON 1,018 (EUR 230).

Most economic sectors registered decreases in average net wages in May, compared to the previous month, mainly due to the occasional bonuses offered in April (quarterly or annual bonuses for outstanding performances, or Easter bonuses),  or amounts from other funds (including meal tickets or gift vouchers). The drops were also caused by lower production and revenues (depending on the contracts), and the employment of staff with lower salaries in some economic activities.

On July 1, the gross minimum wage increased to RON 1,050 (over EUR 233) in Romania.
