„Hello, everybody!” or – better said - „ Bună tuturor!” This is our second Romanian language class.

After having studied some basic vocabulary items related to SALUTURI, NUME, ȚĂRI, NAȚIONALITĂȚI (= Greetings, Names, Countries, Nationalities), today we are going to learn about ORAȘE, PROFESII (Towns, Jobs,)

But – first of all, let’s check your „homework”. Key to exercises:

7.30 = Bună … dimineața…!

20.30 = Bună … seara! …!

16.00 = Bună … ziua …!

II.

– Eu sunt Aura. Sunt din România.

- …Eu ... sunt Franz. Sunt din …Germania/ Austria………. .

– Eu …sunt .. din Milan. Sunt …italian…….. .

III. Eu/sunt/din/Germania./Hansen/este/din/Berlin./Maria/este/din/România./

Mario/este/din/Italia./Olga/este/din/Moscova./Franz/este/din/Austria.

And now, let’s go on with the topic previously announced, namely ORAȘE, PROFESII (Towns, Jobs).

In Romanian, there is a difference between the masculine and feminine forms:

Jobs - masculine Jobs - feminine Translation
inginer ingineră engineer
contabil contabilă accountant
economist economistă economist
ziarist ziaristă journalist
casier casieră cashier
profesor profesoară teacher
chelner chelneriţă waiter/ waitress
doctor doctoriţă doctor
actor actriţă actor/ actress

Let’s use these words!

Look:

Bună ziua! Mă numesc Claudia Popescu. (Eu) sunt ziaristă. Sunt din Cluj, din Romania. = Good afternoon! My name’s Claudia Popescu. I’m from Cluj, from Romania.

Bună seara! Numele meu este Marcus. (Eu) sunt doctor. Sunt din Madrid, din Spania. = Good evening! My name is Marcus. I’m a doctor. I’m from Madrid, from Spain.

Bună dimineaţa! Sunt Brian. Sunt inginer. Sunt din Marea Britanie, din Londra. = Good morning! I’m Brian. I’m an engineer. I’m from Great Britain, from London.

And now some short exercises for you, in order to practice these new words:

I.Completați – masculin sau feminin? (Fill in the sentences: masculine or feminine?):

Raluca este …………. (inginer/ ingineră).

Ioana este ……………………… (economist/ economistă).

Mark este …………………………. (avocat/ avocată).
