Italian cable producer Prysmian will inaugurate its second optical fiber factory in Romania next week.

The plant located in Slatina, southern Romania, and represents the largest such investment in Europe, estimated at EUR 22 million, according to the company.

Prysmian took over its first energy cable factory in Romania in 2005 from Pirelli. The factory, which is also located in Slatina, started producing energy cables in 1973. In 2009, it also started making fiber optics cables for telecom networks. The unit can produce 4.5 million kilometers of cables per year and employs about 1,400 people.

The new plant, which will be inaugurated next Tuesday, is basically an extension of the old one. Construction started in 2015, and the investment amounts to EUR 22 million. The company will thus be able to produce 8 million kilometers of cables per year.
