Insurers’ association: Romania has no laws on moral damages

22 June 2015

Compensations paid by insurance companies for personal injuries and moral damages have been growing alarmingly in Romania, said Remi Vrignaud, president of the National Association of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies (UNSAR).

He thinks that Romania has a legal vacuum in the field of moral damages.

“We consider that we need a stable and predictable system, which includes objective criteria, so that we can relate to certain benchmark cases” Vrignaud said, cited by local Hotnews.ro.

He added that without such a system, some serious accidents are exploited for profit.

The claims paid for injuries through the current mandatory car insurance (RCA) increased by 24% to EUR 104 million last year.

UNSAR initiated a partnership with the Institute of Legal Medicine to develop certain scales on moral damages and a system used in other European countries, such as Slovakia and Spain.
