Two Romanian fight for a place in the Wimbledon final

08 July 2015

Romanian tennis players Horia Tecau and Florin Mergea will meet in the semifinals of the men’s doubles competition at Wimbledon and play for a place in the final.

Horia Tecau and his doubles partner Dutchman Jean Julien Rojer beat the Polish-Serbian couple Marcin Matkowski/Nenad Zimonjici in the quarter-finals after three sets ended 6-4, 6-3, 7-6, on Tuesday.

On the same day, Florin Mergea and his team mate Indian Rohan Bopanna managed to pull a surprise and beat the competition’s favorites, Americans Bob and Mike Bryan, after four sets (7-5, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6). Florin Mergea and his previous partner, Britain’s Dominic Inglot, had beat the Bryans twice in the beginning of this year, first in the third round of the Australian Open and then in the quarter-finals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Mergea and Tecau also played against each other in the semi-finals of the Australian Open this year. Tecau and Rojer won that match but failed to win the competition. Mergea and Tecau play together in Romania's Davis Cup matches.

Horia Tecau also played three doubles finals at Wimbledon, in 2010, 2011, and 2012, together with Swede Robert Lindstedt, but lost all of them.
