Higher minimum wage in Romania starting this week

30 June 2015

The gross minimum wage in Romania will increase by RON 75 (some EUR 16) on Wednesday, July 1, to RON 1,050 (over EUR 233). This is the second increase this year, after the one on January 1, when the minimum salary went up from RON 900 to RON 975.

“We will not stop here for sure – we’ll have another increase in 2016, to up to RON 1,200 per month. The government thus takes a very important measure of social justice and redirects the economic growth to people’s pockets,” Romania's convalescent Prime Minister said in a Facebook post. Ponta is currently on medical leave, after a knee surgery in Turkey.

The average net salary in Romania amounted to RON 1,857 (EUR 421) in April, 1.5% higher than in March (RON 28). Compared to April 2014, the increase was 7%, according to recent data from the National Statistics Institute.

The higher minimum wage will also increase traffic fines. Drivers who break the rules will pay RON 105 (EUR 23) for each penalty point, up from RON 97.5.
