Halep to face Bouchard in Romania – Canada FED Cup clash

11 February 2015

The Romanian women’s tennis team will meet Canada in the FED Cup World Group play-offs, which will take place on April 18-19.

The match between Romanian tennis ace Simona Halep and Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard will be the highlight of this play-off encounter. Halep and Bouchard were last year’s rising stars. Halep made her way to the third spot in the WTA ranking of the best tennis players in the world while Bouchard is currently seventh.

The two players met three times last year. Halep won two of the matches, in the Indian Wells Masters and the WTA Championships in Singapore. However, Bouchard won the most important game, the semi-final in Wimbledon.

Romania reached the play-offs after a hard-fought victory over Spain, on the home court in Galati. Romania won three of the five matches, but it was Irina Camelia Begu (No. 34 WTA) who brought the victory, after winning two matches (one in singles and one in doubles) on Sunday, February 8.

Canada went to the play-offs after losing to the Czech Republic in the first round of the World Group. Bouchard didn’t play but said she would come back for future matches.
