Romanian Govt. announces EUR 150 mln state aid for local movie industry

21 August 2020

Romania’s Government has increased the budget allotted to a state aid scheme for the local movie industry by EUR 150 million, the Economy Ministry announced on Thursday.

The grants scheme can be accessed until the end of 2023.

The total state support for the movie industry, granted based on a scheme approved in 2018, thus reaches EUR 250 million.

The non-reimbursable financing will cover 35% of the total eligible expenses related to movie production. These include the acquisition, rental, manufacture of goods and services, as well as fees, salaries and other payments made to individuals related to the implementation of the project.

Meanwhile, at least 20% of the total budget of the project must be spent in Romania.

A secondary objective of this state aid scheme is to promote Romania as a tourist destination. Thus, an extra 10% of the production costs could be financed (on top of the initial 35%) if the productions highlight a geographical area, a city, or the whole country as well as local touristic objectives and traditions.
