Former head of shortest lived Romanian Government, nominated presidential candidate from Civic Force party

16 December 2013

Former Romanian Prime Minister Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, who occupied the PM seat for only two months, from February to April 2012, is the new presidential candidate from Forta Civica (The Civic Force) party. Romania will organize presidential elections in 2014.

Ungureanu led the creation of the party in June 2012, when it was called the Center Right Initiative. The party aimed at opposing the socialist block running the country. Many members from the Democrat Liberal Part (PDL), chose to jump ship and join Ungureanu's new party.

Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, who was member of the National Liberal Party in the past, became Prime Minister in February 2012, after Emil Boc resigned from his PM seat. Ungureanu led the shortest cabinet in Romania, being overthrown after a vote of no-confidence started by USL in the Parliament in April 2012.

Ungureanu, an Oxford graduate, is the country's former Foreign Intelligence head, which has earned him the name 'Head Spy' in the foreign media. At 44, Ungureanu was the youngest PM at the time, and head of the youngest government the country has seen, with an average age of 48. Current Prime Minister Victor Ponta, 41, is the youngest PM in post-Communist Romania.

Born in Iasi, northern Romania, Ungureanu studied at university in his home town and graduated in history and philosophy three years after the fall of communism in the country. Romanian President Traian Basescu referred to Ungureanu's age group in a recent speech, saying they were 20-21 when communism fell in the country, underlining the rise of a new generation of politicians. Between 1985 and 1989 he was an acting member of the Communist Youth, but not a member of the Communist Party.

Ungureanu holds a Masters degree in Hebrew studies from the Oxford University- Oxford Center for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, St. Cross College, which earned him sympathy from the British Ambassador to Romania, Martin Harris. The Brit, a Cambridge graduate, congratulated Ungureanu on his blog for being the first Oxford graduate to become a Prime Minister in Romania.
