Famous Romanian hacker Guccifer will serve time in Romania

11 October 2016

Famous Romanian hacker Guccifer, on his real name Marcel Lazar, was brought back to Romania on Tuesday, from the U.S., reports local Digi24.

A U.S. federal court sentenced Guccifer to 52 months in prison on September 1 this year. The hacker was indicted for breaking into computer accounts of the Bush family, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and others. He also claimed that he hacked into the personal email server of Hilary Clinton, but the FBI director contradicted him.

In the summer of 2014, a Romanian court sentenced Guccifer to seven years in prison for having hacked the e-mail accounts of the former Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) director George Maior, of MEP Corina Cretu, as well as of several local actors and TV stars.

The two sentences were merged. He was thus brought back to Romania, under Romanian Police and FBI escorts, and will serve time at the Rahova Prison.

Guccifer was extradited to the U.S. earlier this year, following a ruling of Romania’s High Court of Cassation and Justice.
