EU funds to modernize metro lines in Bucharest

Two metro lines in Bucharest, the lines 2 and 4, will be modernized with the use of EU funds and local money, some EUR 538 million, by 2018. The state will have to provide 15% of this amount.

For Line 2 Pipera – Berceni, a EUR 409 million financing was approved, to modernize stations, replace the rolling stock; work should start this December, and end in the second half of 2017, according to the Bucharest metro operator Metrorex, quoted by Economica.net.

The funding will also cover the costs of the new CAF trains, which were paid for, but only partially. For Line 4 Gara de Nord- Străuleşti, a EUR 129 million financing was approved to modernize stations and tunnels. Work is already underway and should be ready in the second part of 2016.
