Romania can reach the 50% municipal waste recycling target by 2020, said Karmenu Vella, the European Commissioner for Environment, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs. One of the most important solutions is the citizens’ involvement in the “door to door” collection process.

Romania has reached the threshold of 3%, but it has committed to the EU to reach a 50% target by 2020.

“Green economy has become one of my priorities, because it protects the environment and helps the EU’s economies become competitive,” said Vella, cited by local Agerpres.

Countries need an efficient waste-management system, generated by very good laws in place. Romania doesn’t start this process from scratch, it has already proven that it can perform in the renewable energy field, the EU Commissioner added.

At the end of April 2015, the European Commission sent Romania to the European Court of Justice for failing to transpose into its legislation the EU law on packaging waste.
