Emergency hospital in Bucharest to have a heliport starting 2017

20 January 2016

The Bucharest University Emergency Hospital (SUUB) will have a heliport, which will complete its integrated emergency system, starting 2017, according to Catalin Cirstoiu, the hospital manager.

“We said in April 2015 that we needed a heliport for major emergencies that arrive at the hospital. We’ve found the investor, we’ll sign the contract, and we’ll start the work that will be due by the end of the year. SUUB and MaxBet will announce the beginning of the work on Wednesday, after signing the protocol,” Cirstoiu told local Mediafax.

Some 65,000 patients are admitted to the hospital annually, the manager added. Some 60% of the total admissions need surgery.

Some 500 cases are registered daily at the emergency unit, and 15-20% of them are major medical emergencies, being severe cases.

The Bucharest University Emergency Hospital was opened in 1978, after the earthquake that hit Romania's capital in 1977 showed that the city needed another such unit in addition to the Floreasca Emergency Hospital. It is currently the only hospital in Bucharest that has all the specialties required for such units.
