Conflict over parking spot in Romanian capital escalates to gun shots

06 January 2014

The lack of parking places in Romanian capital Bucharest and the race to find a parking spot led to a conflict which involved gun shots on Sunday afternoon (January 5).

Four people were involved in a conflict over a parking space in the Dristor area of Bucharest, and three of them were shot with a rubber bullet gun, while the fourth, who had shot the other three, sustained a head injury. The man found his parking place occupied, and entered a conflict with the driver who had taken his parking place. The driver called two of his friends, and the conflict escalated.

The man whose parking spot had been taken shot the other three, after they had attacked him with bats, according to Romanian media, quoting investigators.

All four ended up in hospital, but they sustained minor injuries, and are all conscious. The Police are currently investigating the incident.

Bucharest is known for its lack of parking spaces, and despite a few underground car parks having been opened downtown the capital, it still needs more parking options. The municipality says it is committed to building more car parks in the years to come.
