Conditions for gas link between Caspian region and Romania

25 June 2015

The Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania Interconnector (AGRI) project, which aims to bring liquid gas from the Caspian region to Romania and Hungary, will be feasible if it carries between 5 and 8 billion cubic meters of gas annually. This is the conclusion of the feasibility study carried out by British company Penspen.

“The gas volumes are mainly destined to secure consumption in Romania and Hungary, the rest being directed to other potential markets in Europe,” said Romania’s Energy Ministry Andrei Gerea.

The investment for the AGRI project is estimated at between EUR 1.2 billion and EUR 4.5 billion, based on the transport capacity.

AGRI would transport natural gas from the Caspian region, on the territory of Azerbaijan and Georgia, crossing the Black Sea, to Romania and Bulgaria. The project involves the construction of a liquefaction terminal on the Georgian coast of the Black Sea and a regasification terminal in Romania.
