Chain of spontaneous protests continues: Bucharest teachers ask Education Min. to resign

15 October 2010

Tens of teachers in capital Bucharest staged a spontaneous protest Thursday evening and decided to head for the headquarters of the Education Ministry where they will stay until Education Minister Daniel Funeriu (in picture) resigns.  The decision to start a spontaneous protest was taken by education union federation leaders during a meeting Thursday evening. Unionists are displeased with the situation in the education system and are disgruntled that authorities turn a blind eye on their demands.

The representative of the Federation of Free Unions in Education Liviu Pop said he can't say whether teachers will halt activity on Friday. Romania's Government decided in its Tuesday meeting to seek a confidence vote in Parliament to pass the education bill, although education unionists said they reject this proposition.

The Alliance of Education Union Federations asked the prime minister to follow the parliamentary procedures provided by the Constitution as regards the adoption of organic laws, threatening to notify the courts and international bodies.
