Romanian Revolution investigation to be completed next year

11 October 2016

The investigation on the 1989 Revolution in Romania could be completed next year, according to General Prosecutor Augustin Lazar.

“It’s true that the Revolution case has been unfortunately delayed, but this is a priority of the current legislative term, along with other old cases. We have a very clear investigation plan, a schedule of criminal prosecution deadlines that we have set so that we can have a reasonable deadline for the investigation,” Lazar said, reports local Mediafax.

Former interim General Prosecutor Bogdan Licu requested the reopening of the case in early April this year, as he believed that the previous investigation had missed some things. The High Court of Cassation and Justice confirmed in mid-June the General Prosecutor’s Office decision to reopen the criminal investigation.

The military prosecutors who previously investigated the Revolution events closed the case last autumn, without indicting anybody.

Another important case for the Romanians, which investigates the miners’ uprising in the summer of 1990, could also be completed by the end of this year, the General Prosecutor said. The Romanian Supreme Court decided to reopen this case in the spring of 2015. Former President Ion Iliescu has been questioned as a suspect in this investigation. The prosecutors charged him with crimes against humanity.
